Oxford Motorcycle Action Group has asked Oxfordshire County Council to install secure motorcycle parking facilities in Oxford City centre.

We have based the request on:

• The report of October 2001 by the National Criminal Intelligence Service highlighted the ease with which gangs of motorcycle thieves can lift a motorcycle into the back of a van. Report available from NCIS - www.ncis.gov.uk.
• The government has set a target of a 30% reduction in vehicle crime including motorcycle theft to be achieved from April 1999 to March 2004.
• The Oxfordshire County Council forward plan for December to March refers to the Broad Street Interim Scheme (29/201). Therefore more work is being planned for Broad Street.

The NCIS report highlights major urban conurbations, such as Oxford, as those where organised motorcycle thieves operate, and with a growing number of nearby urban centres now providing secure motorcycle parking Oxford will be increasingly targeted until it provides the necessary facilities.

One of the latest areas to install secure motorcycle parking facilities is Slough, with the installation in December 2001 of motorcycle parking with aesthetically pleasing bollards providing anchor points for securing parked motorcycles.
